When walking through the High Falls area, one will feel interaction with the falls themselves, as well as the nature and public spaces surrounding them. With the creation of newly refurbished residential and commercial spaces, one will feel in touch with nature through their elegance and functionality. The main goal is to connect users to the river and drive them to appreciate and utilize this great asset Rochester has forgotten about. The commercial space serves as a kayak rental in the summer and an ice skate rental in the winter. With this, attention will be geared towards the gorge, Genesee River, and the newly developed green space below. Comfortable outdoor reading rooms and bog gardens will be placed in the patio area creating senses of comfort and the gardens to support the natural water collection for the building. The ample views of the falls landscape will be a primary aspect of the design and will encourage visitors to stay and enjoy the relaxation nature brings.
The residential spaces will be utilized as luxury residential apartments on the third floor and Airbnb's on the fourth. The layouts create a sense of openness and relay direct connections to nature. Natural patterns accompanied by efficient energy systems and appliances will be prevalent in the design. The overall feel of these spaces will encourage people to explore the land below and experience parts of nature through the interior. The goal is to make a net 0 building that will sufficiently have a system that provides itself with sustainable energy. Embedded within the building will be an efficient water system, along with other energy systems that collect solar energy. These energy-efficient applications will create an eco-friendly, sustainable design that is both affordable and reliable.
